About

Turning Reel Sound officially opened its doors in 2017, founded on a lifelong dedication to audio engineering and passion for music. Locally owned and operated in Bainbridge Island, WA., T.R.S. is proud to now offer recording and production services to the community for a wide range of musical and audio projects at reasonable rates. We like to think big musically, while keeping business small and personal.

Lead technician Rory is a certified audio engineer with a certificate from Indigital Studios in Santa Cruz, CA. He is also a multi-instrumentalist with a background in classical and jazz music theory.

"I fell in love with the process of analog recording at a young age making experimental home recordings with a small Yamaha mixer and a 4-track Fostex cassette recorder. Most of the records I love were recorded before digital recording was invented. I always felt analog recording compelled the musicians to play better, and somehow it could capture more of the magic in the moment. When a musician or engineer puts their hands on the faders and can feel how the music is spread across the controls like an instrument, the art of mixing on an analog board can be an inspiring performance in its own right captured in real time."

Rory has since had more than a 15 years of experience in experimental home recording techniques. In addition to providing live sound support to his musical friends for many years, he apprenticed at a professional studio in Santa Cruz, receiving a certification in 2016. Rory has worked with local musicians Little Creek, Casual Sax Quintet, and Jacob Ahearn. His favorite albums include Tom Petty's "Wildflowers" (produced by Rick Rubin), Bob Dylan's "Oh Mercy" (produced by Daniel Lanois), David Bowie's "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust..." (produced by Tony Visconti), and Sly and the Family Stone's "There's A Riot Goin' On" (produced by Sly Stone), and The Beatles "Revolver" (produced by George Martin), among numerous others.
